Undergraduate Medical


Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides one of the main NHS settings for students from the School of Medicine at the University of Leeds. Clinical placements are provided in all departments, supported by dedicated clinical teachers.  The students are able to develop their knowledge, skills and attitudes through direct patient contact and clinical experience. The Undergraduate Clinical Educator team within the Education Service supports the Trust in it’s commitment to medical education.

The team here in Bradford comprises of seven Clinical Educators and a Clinical Skills Technician, all are very experienced health professionals from a range of clinical background including Nursing, Midwifery and Medicine. All are competent teachers and hold relevant teaching qualifications. The team are supported by two administrators who work closely with the clinical areas and staff to provide the clinical experience for the students. At present the Undergraduate Medical Education Director for the Trust is Dr. Alex Brown.

The Undergraduate team are responsible for the planning and delivery of a comprehensive teaching programme for medical students of all years in both primary and secondary care. We work in close collaboration with all clinical areas and departments to provide the best learning experiences for the students.

We support the Medical School in complying with the General Medical Council’s standards and outcomes for medical education, through our commitment to the delivery of high quality, innovative education for all undergraduate medical students.

The Undergraduate Clinical Educator Team also works closely with the Education service as a whole to support Continuing Professional development for all Trust staff.

The team facilitate an annual 2 day course for the Patient Transport service, incorporating basic life support training with teaching on common health problems that they may encounter during the course of their work..

Act as assessors for new doctors developing their Clinical Teacher role.

Facilitate clinical skills teaching for BSc Clinical Science students from Bradford University.

Help facilitate courses run by the Education Service specifically aimed at ‘A’ level students from schools and colleges in the Yorkshire and the Humber area, who are applying for Medicine

Patient and public involvement in undergraduate medical education

Patients are invaluable in contributing to undergraduate medical education, providing unique and expert feedback and assessment to students about their performance, particularly around communication and patient safety issues.
